TW0trees LAUNCESTON

Currently within Launceston's CULTURALlandscape there two tree invested with the stories that come with their 'placedness'. One, the Bunya, and the other, the Elm, have been deemed to be 'unwanted' and if that is left to the city Council's determinations both trees will, as likely as not be cut up into convenient bits and dispersed as firewood, woodchips, whatever without any serious consideration given to their 'value/s'.

What is invested in trees? Please consider:
  • The PLACEmaking stories that belong to the trees and their places; and
  • The canopy cover they offer and cover that is increasing important in the context of the CLIMATEemergency the city and the world needs to address; and
  • The accumulated carbon these trees have within them; and
  • The oxygen they deliver to the atmosphere 24/7; and
  • Their materiality and its potential to provide makers and designers with the wherewithal to meet the needs and aspirations of people - locally, nationally and even internationally.
These TWOtrees offer a Community of Ownership & Interest with opportunities to explore their real value/s if only they can be imagined as a 'resource' rather than so much 'waste material' as is their current status.

A POSITIVE WAY FORWARD

STEP 1 ... Identify and establish a 'Coalition-Of-The-Willing' – TWOtree COTW - to explore the concept of using every last skerrick of these TWOtrees and putting it a useful purpose.

STEP 2 ... Establish a project team from within the COTW to recover the material resource/s invested in the trees and make them available to makers, designers, and others. Speculatively, in part this might take the form of a series of WORKins where the 'wood' is gathered, processed and stored etc.

STEP 3 ... Establish a network of makers and designers willing to utilise the tree's materiality and make the outcomes availe for a 'publication'exhibition, book, video etc.

STEP 4 ... Establish an ADMINISTRATIVEteam auspiced by an incorporated body to ensure that monies raised go towards say the building of a PROOF OF CONCEPT shelter/house/home whatever.

Since we are at the STEP 1 stage EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST are being sought for COTW members. Breaking news there is already one business willing to fell the Bunya and assist with the RESOURCErecovery .... WATCH THIS SPACE!!
