Here we have the class of tools that have been evolving for almost half a century that have fundamentally changed the way a 'log' might be imagined. That is from so much 'timber', that is wood to be prepared for use in building and carpentry -thus good and bad timber.These tools turn bad 'timber' into GOODwood or a material from which to make all manner of things other than 'lumber'. they allow 'wood's' materiality to be explored and exploited and more freely. Along with the chain saw the 'materiality' of 'wood' – its MATTERreality or the understood 'reality' of wood, its nature etc. – has undergone a significant paradigm shift. Moreover, the haptic experience of making matters more and more in a time when technology can increasingly fulfil need.The things we need we buy and the things we desire are best made by us or by someone making them for/with us.
