SPLITwood MINDset

Here in a context other than the one gleaned from here the possibilities that open up when sawn wood is split/cleaved takes the understanding of 'wood's' materiality into a different MINDspace.  Interestingly wood was split/cleaved by default when saws were hard to make, and expensive, and it's 'refinement' was achieved by blades and abrasives.  However, with 'wood' becoming more precious there is sometimes a need to celebrate its materiality more overtly. SO, the question arises how did it come to pass that sawn, shaved and abraded surface on wood became the PROPERway and all too often a mediocre way to make with it. In any event splitting enables interestingways to explore wood's materiality not to mention to waste less perhaps.

There is no rule that says that wood surfaces MUST be flat and smooth because there other ways to imagine and make the things we live with and use.
