RHIZOOMATICS

Rhizoomatic procedure:

The procedure followed is one of evolution. There is no overall plan of what would constitute the final result. There are five areas evolving in the authoring of such work.

The selection and transcription of information related to 'the research'

The preparation of graphic material and this includes scanning and collaging material from multiple sources.

The creation of models in interfacing digital formats.

The collection and manipulation of digital material – sound and video etc.

The authoring of text etc. that trigger transitional outcomes – graphics, sounds,  animations .

The general result sought:
A Digital Rhizoomatic resource that has exposure locally, nationally and internationally.

The process is a machine of evolution, a research machine.

Various issues about the language of interactive lead to further research resulting in the actual creation of  work, and the continued exploration of even more abstract interface designs

Conclusion: A Digital Rhizoomatic Process is an interactive work, which exhibits islands of consistency in a sea of association.

The 'Rhizome' And  Nomadic Thought.

Structure seems to be the overarching theme in a world rife with geological and botanical metaphors at the ready for those who seek to explain spaces and places and the relationships within them. Conscious human thought patterns are in a state of constant motion and apparent instability.

In a world looking for workable metaphors the wish to place a rhizome on a ‘plateaus’ in their thinking. Here each plateau can be read starting anywhere and can be related to any other plateau almost anywhere

Further, the rhizome can be imagined as having neither beginning nor end, but always a middle from which it grows and from which it spills out.

Notably the rhizome is borrowed from botany, where it is a horizontal underground plant stem capable of producing the shoot and root systems of a new plant. The mycelium's rhizomatic 'structure' is an illustration of a network structure that enables mushrooms to absorb nutrients from their environment.

The ramifications of 'metaphor' – botanical metaphors especially – of the 'tree and root' have been used to efficiently say what is otherwise extremely difficult or even impossible to communicate.

Further motivating the importance of botanical terminology, it has been noted that the idea that “thought itself is botanical in nature and that humans should look toward plants as a model for dwelling in the world, because they provide an alternate paradigm for the treatment of space, time, consumption, and death.”  – Wampole, Rootedness: The Ramifications of a Metaphor.

The logic of the spiritual reality of the root-tree might well consider the rhizome to be a radical enough shift away from the root to deserve its own concept. Nonetheless, a comparison of the tree vs root vs rhizome in a different way to understand the relationships in the world we inhabit together.

In the world of thinkers, where to begin in 'philosophy' has always been regarded as a very delicate problem, for beginning means eliminating all presuppositions. Whereas in science one is confronted by objective presuppositions which axiomatic rigour can eliminate in order to 'advance understandings'
